Yemen’s naval blockade in support of Gaza forces full shutdown of Eilat Port

The Yemeni Armed Forces-led naval blockade in support of Gaza has forced the total shutdown of Eilat Port — the country’s only Red Sea terminal — after nearly two years of paralysis. Since the blockade began in November 2023, shipping to Eilat collapsed, revenues plunged 80 per cent, and ship traffic all but disappeared. The final blow came when Eilat’s municipality, citing NIS 10 million in unpaid taxes, seized the port’s bank accounts, halting its last remaining operations. The port is officially set to shut down on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

Eilat had been a key entry point for vehicles from the Far East, handling nearly half of Israel’s car imports. Now, with the port frozen and staff furloughed, the Israeli government is scrambling to reroute trade via Mediterranean ports — raising shipping costs and logistics pressure. While the Transport Ministry considers legally forcing car shipments back through Eilat, the closure highlights how the Yemeni Armed Forces’ campaign has not only reshaped regional shipping lanes but also inflicted major economic disruption on Israel’s southern gateway.

Shas Decides to Quit Government, Leaving Netanyahu with Minority, but is Not Pushing for Elections

Shas party newspaper HaDerech blamed the crisis on what it called “Likud and Edelstein’s blatant violation of agreements on the law regulating the status of yeshiva students.”

Fellow Haredi party United Torah Judaism quit the coalition Monday night after being presented with a copy of a proposed enlistment bill prepared by Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein, which it argued violated the terms of a compromise that was reached by the two sides last month when an effort was being made to prevent the Haredi parties from toppling the government ahead of the war with Iran.
