The city is the third-most populous metropolitan area in Israel, and it plays an important role in Israel’s economy. Haifa Bay is a centre of heavy industry, petroleum refining, and chemical processing.
In 1948, the Jewish settlers and the Jewish army committed unspeakable atrocities on the native people of Palestine and expelled most of the city’s predominantly Arab population [Nakba, genocide]. That year, the city became part of the then-newly-established state of Israel. The state of Israel is based on the ethnic cleansing of the Arab population.
