  • Alawite civilians targeted in killing sprees across central Syria

Nearly a dozen Alawite civilians have been found tortured to death in prison or executed in recent days in Homs governorate.

Homs Governorate in Syria is experiencing a surge in sectarian murders and deaths from torture of prisoners, according to reports from Syrian rights groups.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported several cases of Alawites murdered in Homs in recent days.

Shortly after midnight on 25 April, unidentified gunmen stormed a house on Al-Zeir Street in the Karm al-Zeitoun neighborhood of Homs, killing an Alawite man, Alaa Nasr, and his brother, Hussein Nasr, before dumping their bodies in the street.

On 24 April, the body of a civilian from the village of Habran in Suwayda Governorate was found inside an abandoned house near the Dabaa military airport in the Homs countryside. He had been shot several times while attempting to cross into Lebanon. The body of another unidentified person was found next to him.

A university student, Mohammad Saeed al-Waari, was also killed hours after his arrest today when a General Security patrol raided his home in the Karm al-Loz neighborhood. According to sources, his body was found murdered at the city’s Al-Nahda Hospital.

The Syrian Coast Monitor reported that in a voice recording, Waari’s mother announced her son’s death and said: “They took him and shot him in the head. How could they do that? How could they look him in the face, a college student, and then shoot him in the head?”

The Syrian Coast Monitor stated that in another incident, an armed group affiliated with the HTS-led General Security stormed the Alawite-majority neighborhood of Ash al-Warwar in Damascus on the evening of 25 April. They entered the area’s new local council and executed the young men gathered inside, resulting in the deaths of four Alawite men: Ali Hussein Khalouf, Diab Salloum, Shuaib Youssef, and Ahmed Mahrez.

In another case, Mahmoud Hamed Deeb, an engineer and university professor, was shot and killed by members of the General Security in the town of Kafraya, south of Homs.

According to the Syrian Coast Monitor, Deeb was lured to the town on 23 April after being asked to conduct a geological survey for a planned well-drilling site. He lost contact shortly after arriving, and his body was discovered the following day.

Deeb was a faculty member at the University of Homs’s College of Science and had an Alawite background.

SOHR reported further that three young men from the western Homs countryside were found tortured to death on 24 April in Damascus government prisons after being arrested during security campaigns earlier this year.

The first young man was arrested between 21 and 23 January in the village of Tarin, and his body was found murdered and dumped near the Houla Dam in the Homs countryside.

The bodies of two brothers from the village of Khirbet al-Hamam were found on 25 April in Al-Waer Hospital in Homs.  They were arrested on 22 January during a similar security campaign.

“These crimes, which coincided in timing and varied in their methods, raise growing concerns about a dangerous security escalation, particularly with the increasing incidence of targeted killings, amid a complete lack of judicial oversight and accountability for the conditions of detainees in the regime’s prisons,” SOHR warned.

On 7 March, gunmen affiliated with the Syrian government descended on the coastal regions of Syria, massacring over 2,200 Alawite civilians. Gunmen affiliated with the Ministry of Defense and General Security went door to door in Alawite neighborhoods and villages, executing all fighting-aged men, as well as some women, the elderly, and children. The gunmen also looted and burned homes.

  • Huge explosion rocks Shahid Rajaee port in southern Iran; over 560 injured

A powerful explosion at Shahid Rajaee port in southern Iran has caused widespread damage and casualties, with emergency teams rushing to the scene to bring the situation under control.

According to the Hormozgan Emergency Department, at least 561 people were injured after a fuel tanker exploded for unknown reasons at Shahid Rajaee port in Hormozgan Province on Sunday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The wounded were transferred to Hormozgan hospitals.

The director general of Hormozgan’s crisis management department said the explosion was extremely strong, but the cause has not yet been determined.

Initial reports indicate that the blast originated in an administrative building within the port complex. The blast was so intense that it completely destroyed the administrative building and severely damaged many vehicles.

Following the incident, all port operations were suspended as security and emergency teams worked to secure the area. Authorities immediately declared a state of emergency at hospitals across Bandar Abbas in preparation for possible mass casualties.

  • Jolani of HTS Seeks normalization with the Zionist colony, Jolani writes to Trump

Jolani, the head terrorist of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham-led (HTS) has expressed readiness to normalize Syrian ties with the Zionist colony amid Washington’s plans to revoke anti-Damascus sanctions and the ZionistColony’s occupation of more Syrian land.

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani was quoted by US Congressman Cory Mills as saying after a meeting in Syria last week that Damascus “was interested under the right conditions” to normalize ties with Tel Aviv.

Mills told Bloomberg that he discussed with the HTS regime’s president the steps needed for him to obtain sanctions relief, with Jolani responding during their 90-minute meeting that Syria seeks to join the Abraham Accords — the series of normalization agreements that US President Donald Trump’s previous administration negotiated between Israel and a few Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

The US congressman said he had told Jolani that Syria must destroy the chemical weapons allegedly left behind by the Assad government, partner with neighboring countries on countering terrorism and deal with foreign fighters who filled the ranks of the HTS.

Stating that Jolani is open to clarifying how he plans to address the presence of foreign fighters still operating in Syria, Mills told Bloomberg that he had pressed Jolani to provide assurances to Israel.

Mills also said Syria’s self-proclaimed president had provided him with a letter to take to Trump, without providing details on its contents.

The 42-year-old Jolani was in prison in Iraq for years on charges of belonging to the al-Qaeda terrorist outfit after the 2003 US-led invasion of the Arab country. He is still under US and UN sanctions for his ties to the terrorist group, which the American officials confirmed to have been established by the then administration in Washington.

The US imposed debilitating sanctions on Syria after the onset of foreign-sponsored militancy in the Arab country in 2011. The bans have generally remained in place since the HTS toppled the government of Bashar al-Assad late last year.

Since the collapse of Assad’s government, the Israeli military has been launching airstrikes against military installations, facilities, and arsenals belonging to Syria’s now-defunct army.

The Israeli regime has also intensified its aggression on Syria by initiating an unlawful land appropriation beyond the occupied Golan Heights in what is seen as a component of the so-called “Greater Israel” project.

This strategic territory has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War.

The Israeli military in December advanced beyond the Golan Heights demilitarized buffer zone, occupying Mount Hermon and other strategic areas inside Syria, in violation of a 1974 international agreement between Israel and Syria.

Media reports recently said the Israeli military was organizing hiking tours for Israeli settlers in the occupied Golan Heights demilitarized buffer zone during the Passover holiday.

The United Nations and the international community recognize the region as a part of Syria, while the United States stands alone in its formal recognition of Israel’s illegal occupation of the Golan Heights.

The US military has since 2014 deployed its forces and equipment in northeastern Syria with no authorization from the Arab country’s government, with the Pentagon claiming that the deployment is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh terrorists.

Damascus, however, maintained that the deployment was meant to plunder the country’s natural resources.

Over the past years, multiple footage have emerged revealing that the US occupation forces have used tankers to smuggle Syrian crude oil from the country’s northern provinces to their bases in northern Iraq, as part of Washington’s systematic plundering of Syria’s basic commodities.

The HTS militant group seized control of Damascus on December 8, culminating a swift offensive that had begun in northwestern province of Aleppo just two weeks earlier and ultimately brought an end to Assad’s 24-year rule.

The HTS administration has since been involved in flagrant violations of human rights in Syria, particularly against minorities, namely Syria’s Alawite minority, drawing widespread condemnations form the international community.

UNIFIL patrol blocked by Lebanese men in South Lebanon amid increased activity –

Following intensified UNIFIL operations in southern Lebanon to search for alleged Hezbollah facilities, one of its patrols was blocked today and forced to retreat.

According to reports, two young men from the town of Tayr Debba (Tyre District), riding a motorcycle, intercepted a UNIFIL convoy as it passed through a street in the town, forcing the patrol to withdraw immediately.

Al-Akhbar’s correspondent said UNIFIL later filed a complaint with the Lebanese army against the two men who had stopped the convoy.

Meanwhile, the French contingent in UNIFIL conducted a second consecutive day of intensive patrols in the Wadi al-Salouqi area at the base of Houla.

On the ground, Israeli forces continue to violate the ceasefire agreement in the south. According to the National News Agency, Israeli soldiers fired bursts of gunfire from near the separation wall in Kfar Kila toward the town square.

This comes amid heavy Israeli aerial activity, with warplanes and surveillance drones flying over most southern villages.

  • US prepares $100bn arms deal with Saudi Arabia ahead of Trump visit

Washington is preparing a major arms package for Saudi Arabia worth over $100 billion, according to six sources cited by Reuters.
The deal is expected to be announced during US President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to the kingdom in May.
This proposed package follows a failed attempt by the former US president Joe Biden government to broker a broader security agreement that included Saudi normalization with Israel in exchange for advanced US arms, assistance in developing a civilian nuclear program, and reduced Chinese influence in the region.
While it remains unclear whether Trump’s proposal includes similar conditions, the package is expected to feature a range of advanced weaponry.

This includes C-130 transport aircraft, missiles, and radars supplied by major US defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin, RTX (formerly Raytheon Technologies), Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and General Atomics.

Lockheed is reportedly involved in a potential $20 billion drone deal involving MQ-9B SeaGuardian-style aircraft – an agreement discussed since 2018.
Defense company executives are reportedly considering traveling to Saudi Arabia as part of the US delegation. The Pentagon emphasized that the US–Saudi defense relationship remains strong under Trump’s leadership.
The US has a longstanding history of arms sales to Saudi Arabia, highlighted by Trump’s 2017 proposal of $110 billion in weapons deals. However, only $14.5 billion of those sales had been initiated by 2018, and Congress raised concerns following the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. These concerns led to a 2021 congressional ban on offensive weapons sales under president Biden.
The Biden administration began softening its stance in 2022 due to shifting geopolitical dynamics, including the Ukraine war’s impact on oil markets. The ban on offensive weapons sales was lifted in 2024, as the US worked more closely with Riyadh after Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack on Israel.
Meanwhile, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman visited Tehran on April 17, meeting Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and conveying a message from King Salman.
The visit resulted from renewed nuclear talks between the US and Iran amid fears of regional escalation.
On the Israeli front, Trump’s ambassador nominee Mike Huckabee told Congress that a Saudi–Israel normalization deal is a top priority and “within reach.”
However, Riyadh maintains it will not normalize relations until a Palestinian state is established – a demand Israel currently rejects. Despite public posturing, analysts suggest Saudi leaders may be privately more flexible. However, chances of a deal remain slim under Israel’s current hardline government, which intends to continue the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza and the annexation of the occupied West Bank.

  • UAE deploys radar in Somalia to monitor Yemen’s Zionist Colony strikes: Report

The United Arab Emirates has reportedly deployed a Zionist military radar to Somalia’s Puntland to monitor anti-Zionist Colony  attacks conducted by Yemen in support of Palestinians subjected to genocide in Gaza.
According to satellite imagery from early March, the Zionist-made ELM-2084 3D Active Electronically Scanned Array Multi-Mission Radar, which is one of the components of Israel’s Iron Dome system, was installed near Bosaso airport.
US-based Watan newspaper reported this week that the radar is aimed at monitoring strikes conducted by Yemeni forces against Israeli targets in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
“This indicates that Abu Dhabi is conducting a monitoring and protection operation on behalf of Tel Aviv from African soil,” the daily said, citing familiar sources.
According to the sources, the UAE is also facilitating negotiations for the establishment of an Israeli base in Somaliland, which declared independence from Mogadishu in 1991, in return for promises to promote international recognition of the region that lies on the Gulf of Aden.
Israeli newspaper Haaretz last year reported that Israel, with Emirati support, aims to establish a military base in Somaliland to counter the Yemeni forces.
On Thursday, Middle East Eye also cited a regional source as saying that the radar was deployed at the airport late last year.Meanwhile, MEE cited other sources as saying the deployment took place as the UAE has been using Bosaso airport to militarily support the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.
“The UAE installed the radar shortly after the RSF lost control of most of Khartoum in early March,” a regional source told MEE.
“The radar’s purpose is to detect and provide early warning against drone or missile threats, particularly those potentially launched by the Houthis, targeting Bosaso from outside,” the source added, referring to forces of Yemen’s military and its Ansarullah resistance movement.
Sudan has accused the UAE at the International Court of Justice of violating the Genocide Convention by supporting paramilitary forces in its Darfur region.
Two separate Somali sources, cited by MEE, claimed that Puntland’s President Said Abdullahi Deni did not seek approval from Somalia’s federal government or the Puntland parliament for this arrangement.
“This is a secret deal, and even the highest levels of Puntland’s government, including the cabinet, are unaware of it,” said one Somali source with direct knowledge of the issue.
Since the onset of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, Yemeni forces have carried out scores of operations in support of the war-hit Gazans, striking targets throughout the occupied Palestinian territories, in addition to targeting Israeli ships or vessels heading towards ports in the occupied territories.

  • Turkey expands military occupation of northern Iraq: Report

Turkish forces occupy Iraq under the pretext of combatting the Kurdish PKK group, which recently declared a ceasefire after its leader issued a call to disarm

The Turkish military has significantly expanded its presence in Iraq since the leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) declared an immediate ceasefire early last month.

“The Turkish military presence in northern Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, has so far reached more than 80 locations, ranging from barracks and outposts to bases housing heavy weapons, including the Zilkan base near Bashiq. The number of Turkish soldiers within the Iraqi borders will exceed 10,000,” Adi Abdul Hadi, a leader in the Fatah Alliance, told Baghdad Today.

The Fatah Alliance is part of the Coordination Framework (CF), a coalition of Shia parties that has significant influence in Iraq’s political landscape.

“Turkish forces have reinforced their presence in at least 12 locations following the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s announcement of a cessation of armed operations. The Turkish movements represent a continued reinforcement and advance deep into Iraq, which has now reached more than 140 kilometers, raising many questions,” he went on to say, adding that “all the excuses Ankara had been using regarding the nature of its military presence in northern Iraq have ended.”

He also called for increased pressure on Turkiye to dismantle these military sites, stressing that “there is no justification for the Turkish presence, especially with the recurring artillery shelling and air strikes.”

Ankara’s military has been operating in Iraq for years under the pretext of securing its border with Kurdish militant groups, namely the PKK – which is outlawed in Turkiye and has been engaged in armed insurgency against the Turkish state since the 1980s.

In August 2024, Baghdad and Ankara signed a deal that was meant to see the Turkish military turn over the base in the northern Iraqi town of Bashiqa to the Iraqi army.

In addition to that, the agreement called for Baghdad and Ankara to build a joint military coordination center based in Iraq. However, Turkish forces are still present at the site.

The Turkish army occupied the Bashiqa base in 2016.

Over the years, many civilians have been killed by Turkish airstrikes and artillery shelling in the northern Kurdistan region of Iraq. Ankara’s bases have also been targeted with rocket attacks.

Last month, the PKK declared an immediate ceasefire in its insurgent war against Turkiye.

This came after the group’s leader Abdullah Ocalan issued a message from his prison cell on an island off Istanbul, calling on the PKK to lay down its arms and dissolve.

Despite this, clashes erupted between PKK fighters and Turkish forces in northern Iraq Duhok province a day later.

In early February, Iraqi MP Hussein al-Ameri condemned the “unprecedented Turkish expansion” in Iraqi territory.
