Poll finds Americans not satisfied with handling of Epstein files

A majority of Americans suspect the government is intentionally withholding noteworthy information.

Americans remain broadly dissatisfied with the amount of information released by the federal government about Jeffrey Epstein, with a substantial majority suspecting the government is withholding information about the case, a new poll finds.

A CNN survey released Monday shows 49 percent of Americans are not satisfied with the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein document release, despite the Department of Justice releasing thousands of investigation files last year after being compelled to do so by Congress.

The same poll found only 6 percent of Americans were satisfied with the amount of information released about Epstein. Those figures are roughly in line with a CNN poll from July, which found 50 percent of Americans were dissatisfied with the government’s handling of the Epstein investigation documents, compared to 3 percent who were satisfied.

Following bipartisan calls to release the Epstein files throughout Trump’s first year back in office, Congress passed a law in November requiring the DOJ to release by mid-December all documents tied to Epstein, the late convicted sex offender with ties to several wealthy individuals. In late December, the DOJ said they had identified potentially more than a million documents connected to the investigations into Epstein that have yet to be released.

The CNN poll found Americans do not trust the Trump administration’s handling of the Epstein investigation documents, with 67 percent saying they believe the government is intentionally holding back information that should be released, while 16 percent said the government is making an effort to release all information possible.

The documents released thus far have offered nominal details about Trump’s relationship to Epstein, whom the president has acknowledged socializing with previously. Trump has said he ended their friendship after Epstein “stole people” who worked at his Mar-a-Lago club and has denied any wrongdoing in connection to Epstein.Among the documents already released are images of well-known figures alongside Epstein, including Trump. Former President Bill Clinton appeared in multiple photos as part of an initial release of documents. A spokesperson for the former president accused the Trump administration of selectively including photos of Clinton, a longtime Trump political foe, and denied Clinton’s involvement in any wrongdoing.

The timeline for the release of further documents is unclear after the DOJ’s delaying its release of all the Epstein documents. But despite the clamor from members on both sides of the aisle for transparency, some Republicans who called for the documents to be released are downplaying the government’s failure to release all Epstein materials in compliance with federal law.

The CNN poll was conducted from Jan. 9 to Jan. 12, via phone and online surveys of 1,209 adults. The margin of error for the poll was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
