Taiz Governorate Deputy for the Development Sector Abdul Wasi’ al-Shamsi inspected today the Al-Khalaf water dam and the adjacent agricultural areas in Ma’awiya District.
Al-Shamsi, accompanied by Ma’awiya Cooperative Association President Nabil al-Barhmi, Association Secretary-General Ali Abdulkarim, Executive Director of the Agricultural Cooperative Union branch in the governorate Amer al-Ahdal, and Ma’awiya Association Executive Director Nabil al-Wajeeh, reviewed the irrigation activities and the mechanism for distributing water to agricultural lands in the adjacent areas and valleys, as well as the random pumping of water from the dam for irrigating qat trees.
Deputy al-Shamsi emphasized the importance of expanding the cultivation of various crops by utilizing the dam’s water, which is considered the largest water dam in Taiz governorate and covers a vast agricultural area in the Al-Khalaf area, Hawamrah sub-district, in addition to some agricultural areas in the Asawadah sub-district.
He stressed the continuation of implementing the project for drilling water caravans and organizing the irrigation process to achieve maximum possible benefit from the dam, in cooperation with the association, with a focus on supporting the cultivation of basic grain crops.
For his part, the President of Ma’awiya Association and the Association’s Secretary-General indicated that providing and installing an irrigation network for the dam will contribute to supporting the agricultural process in various agricultural areas and valleys, especially in the current season, and will encourage farmers to turn towards cultivating corn, beans, and contribute to achieving self-sufficiency and reducing the import bill, as the area of those valleys is estimated at 35 hectares irrigated by the dam throughout the year.
Furthermore, the Governorate Deputy for the Development Sector and the Executive Director of the Agricultural Union branch Amer al-Ahdal discussed with the Ma’awiya Association cadre ways to advance economic work in the district, and the meeting explored the available opportunities that can be invested to improve the economic situation.
