Trump says US ‘has to have’ Greenland for national security to counter Russia and China

Security pretext to colonize for rare earths –

US President Donald Trump on Monday renewed his claim that the United States needs Greenland for national security, announcing that a special envoy he appointed to the Arctic island would “lead the charge.” Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his envoy on Sunday, reviving controversy over Washington’s interest in the mineral rich, strategically located territory, which is self governing under Danish sovereignty.

Speaking in Florida, Trump said Greenland was essential to counter Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic, insisting US interest was driven by security rather than resources. “We have to have it,” Trump said.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen rejected the remarks in a joint statement, stressing that Greenland belongs to its people and cannot be annexed, even under the pretext of international security.
