US forces have carried out another lethal strike on an alleged drug trafficking vessel in the Caribbean, killing three people, War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced. The operation brings the death toll from President Donald Trump’s so-called anti-narcotics campaign to at least 70.
Since early September, Washington has targeted boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, destroying at least 18 vessels, including a semi-submersible, though it has yet to release a single shred of evidence proving the targets were involved in drug smuggling or posed any threat to the US. Critics have condemned the strikes as extrajudicial killings disguised as counter-narcotics operations.
Trump’s administration has expanded its military footprint across Latin America under the banner of combating drug trafficking, during which they’ve deployed six Navy ships, F-35 jets to Puerto Rico, and the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group.
On Thursday, Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic war powers resolution that would have required Trump to seek congressional authorization for any strikes on Venezuela, leaving his regional campaign unchecked.
