1968 Palestinians liberated in first phase of ceasefire deal

As part of the first phase of the agreement to end the two-year z¿onist -American genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, a total of 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in zionist jails, along with 1,718 Palestinians detained since October 7, 2023, were released on Monday.

Among those to be freed are prominent figures such as Mahmoud al-Ardah, leader of the Freedom Tunnel operation; Ayham Kamamji, his comrade in the escape; Kamil Abu Hanish, writer and PFLP leader serving nine life sentences; Bassem Khandaqji, novelist and winner of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction serving three life sentences; and Mahmoud Issa, a Palestinian student and writer imprisoned since 1993, who established Al-Qassam cells in al-Quds dedicated to the liberation of Palestinian prisoners.

Many of these individuals have reportedly already reunited with their families in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian media reports.

The Gaza-based Hamas resistance movement also released 20 Israeli captives early Monday, including Elkana Bohbot, Matan Angrest, Avinatan Or, Yosef-Haim Ohana, Alon Ohel, Evyatar Davud, Guy Gilboa-Dalal, Rom Braslavski, twins Gali and Ziv Berman, Eitan Mor, Segev Kalfon, Maxim Herkin, Eitan Horn, Bar Kupershtein, Omri Miran, and brothers David and Ariel Cunio.

Israeli soldiers Nimrod Cohen and Matan Zangauker were also among those released.

In a statement, the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, described the agreement as the “fruit of the steadfastness of our people and the resilience of its resistance fighters,” affirming their commitment to the deal as long as the occupation complies with its terms.

The Prisoners’ Affairs Authority reported that 3,985+ Palestinian prisoners were released through three exchange deals during the Al-Aqsa Flood battle (November 2023, February 2025, and October 2025:

– 486 serving life sentences
– 114 women
– 297 children
– 33 expected life sentence and high sentence
– 2,724 prisoners arrested from Gaza after October 7.
