Finland Withdraws from Landmine Ban Treaty Citing Russian Threat –
Finland announced its withdrawal from the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel landmines, with the decision approved by 157 lawmakers against 18. Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said the swift move signals strong, unified defense action. The withdrawal will take effect six months after Finland formally notifies the UN. Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland also plan to exit the treaty amid rising security concerns from Russia. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over these developments. The treaty prohibits the use, stockpiling, and production of landmines due to their severe civilian toll.
