At Least 60 Migrants Drown Off Libyan Coast Amid Surge in Crossings

At least 60 migrants, including women and children, drowned after two boats sank off Libya’s coast, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported.

According to survivors, 21 people — including Eritreans, Pakistanis, Egyptians, and Sudanese — went missing on June 12 near Al-Shi’ab port in western Libya. Only five people were rescued.

A similar incident occurred the next day off the coast of Tobruk in eastern Libya, where 39 more migrants went missing. Fishermen saved one survivor, and three bodies were later recovered.

In Tunisia, authorities found 32 unidentified bodies between June 1 and 11, according to the National Guard.

The IOM urged the international community to increase search and rescue efforts and ensure the safe disembarkation of survivors. UNHCR also reported a 15% rise in migrant arrivals to Italy as of June 15, with over 26,000 reaching its shores—mostly from Libya.
