Ahmad Manasra released from Zionist colony prison after decade of ‘torture, abuse’

Shortly after release ‘The Zionist colony issued a house arrest order for 23-year-old freed Palestinian detainee Ahmad Manasra until Sunday, with a financial bail set at 3,000 shekels’.

Zionist authorities released the Palestinian prisoner Ahmad Manasra on 10 April, who was detained at 13 years of age and has been in prison for nearly a decade.

Al Mayadeen’s correspondent reported that Manasra was “deliberately” let out far away from the prison gate where his family was waiting for him.

Manasra and his cousin were accused of stabbing two Israeli settlers in the Pisgat Zeev settlement in the occupied West Bank. His 15-year-old cousin was killed on the spot by Israeli forces while 13-year-old Manasra was severely beaten by settlers in the area and hit by a car, fracturing his skull.

Footage from before his arrest showed him bleeding on the ground while being cursed at by settlers.

Manasra was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison and subjected to many forms of mistreatment – including psychological torture and aggressive interrogations – before eventually being diagnosed with schizophrenia due to his time in solitary confinement.

His mistreatment worsened after the start of the war on Gaza in October 2023, as was the case with thousands of other prisoners.

Manasra’s lawyer told Al Mayadeen that he “was subjected to torture and solitary confinement that continued from 2021 until the beginning of the current war,” and “was subjected to all the methods and policies of abuse that prisoners were subjected to during the war.”

Zionist intelligence warned his family against any celebrations of his release.

A global campaign to secure his release gained traction over the last several years. “Ahmad Manasra’s release today is a huge relief for him and for his family, but nothing can undo the years of injustice, abuse, trauma, and ill-treatment he endured behind bars. Instead of releasing him on medical grounds years earlier when his mental health conditions significantly deteriorated, the Zionist parole committee invoked a provision in the abusive Counter-Terrorism Law to block his early release,” said Heba Morayef, Amnesty International’s regional director.

“Ahmad Manasra was interrogated at age 13 without a lawyer or parent present,” she went on to say, adding that he now must “be granted adequate access to the healthcare he needs in his native East Jerusalem without any discrimination and he and his family must be protected from any form of intimidation and abuse.”

The Zionist colony is the only ‘state’ in the world that prosecutes children in military courts, denying them fundamental fair trial rights and protections. On top of this, most of the confessions used to convict these children are allegedly obtained using coercion and torture.

As of November 2024, about 270 Palestinian minors were held in Zionist colony prisons, mainly in the Ofer and Megiddo prisons. This figure does not include those detained or kidnapped by Zionist forces in the Gaza Strip.

In September 2024, 85 of these minors were held under administrative detention, a practice that allows imprisonment without charge or trial, leading to potential indefinite detention.

Since 2015, over 9,300 Palestinian minors have been detained by Zionist ‘authorities’.
