The Sudanese military announced today that it has regained control of Khartoum Airport from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), after two years of the RSF being stationed there. The army has also surrounded the RSF’s last stronghold in the capital, south of Khartoum, from multiple directions. The army’s strategic moves also included sealing off the Manshiya Bridge, one of the crossings over the Blue Nile, and leaving the Jabal Awliah Bridge as the only exit for RSF forces.
The Sudanese military had earlier regained control of key facilities such as the presidential palace, the central bank, and the National Intelligence headquarters. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has caused tens of thousands of deaths, displaced over 12 million people, and created one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world. The war has led to a division of the country, with the army controlling the north and east, while the RSF maintains control over much of the Darfur region in the west and parts of the south.
