Lebanese Army announced on Sunday it was implementing a plan to safeguard the northern and eastern borders of the country, after Syria’s opposition took control of Damascus.

“In light of the rapid developments and delicate circumstances that the region is going through, the army command is monitoring the situation on the borders and inside to prevent any threat to civil peace,” the army command announced on Sunday, via its Twitter account.

In this context, the units assigned to monitor and control the northern and eastern borders were bolstered, in conjunction with tightening control procedures.

“The deployed military units are implementing exceptional measures to maintain security and protect civil peace throughout Lebanese territory.”

Syria’s armed opposition entered the capital, Damascus, early on Sunday as Prime Minister Mohamed Ghazi Al-Jalali voiced readiness to cooperate with any leadership that is chosen by the Syrian people.
