Majid Freeman was a campaigner for Shockat Adam, who unseated Jonathan Ashworth in Leicester South.

The police have not said which alleged conduct by Freeman formed the basis of the criminal charges.

Freeman was part of the campaign by Adam to unseat Ashworth.

It is unclear if Mr Freeman has any formal association with Mr Adam.

However, despite the unknown charges and the  unclear relations with the pro-Palestine Labour MP, “Lord Walney, the Government’s anti-Semitism tsar, described the news as “disturbing”.

The police said Freeman would appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on July 24.
