More than 80 killed in stampede in Yemeni capital

More than 80 people were killed and hundreds injured in a crush at a charity distribution event in war-torn Yemen on Thursday, Huthi officials said after one of the deadliest stampedes in a decade. Hundreds of people in the poverty-hit country had gathered at a school in capital Sanaa to receive cash handouts of 5,000 Yemeni Rials (around $8).

A grave human tragedy unfolding so close to the end of Ramadan. This may finally open the world’s eyes and conscience to see the scale of suffering in a war-torn country where every single day means fighting for survival. There has been a deadly air sea land blockade on Yemen since 2015, an embargo that engulfed the country, making 24 million people dependent on humanitarian aid.

There is a United Nations mandate UNSCR2216 Yemen on the country crippling the economy and pushing Yemeni into complete dependency. By the time when Hadi rushed to Saudi Arabia to gather support, he was not even the rightful president of the country. When taking over power, his government was meant to be an interim or a transitional one, lasting initially only for two years. Based on lies and scheming, the international community led by the United Nations started a completely illegal war on Yemen.

Another tragic day in Sana’a, 19 April 2023. People attempt to free themselves during a stampede.
